Force 9 plus gales…

I was wrong saying it was windy back in April – last night was WINDY. Weather station at RAF Leuchars was registering a steady force 9, with gusts up to force 11 / 70mph.
Just as I was starting to think the garden was looking its best ever, I had a frantic evening rushing around trying to cover the crops with anything I could find to stop them being shredded – chimney pots, plastic boxes, waste bins – all upended and weighed down with old bricks.

How not to harvest asparagus
And then the greenhouse started to self destruct (again…) showering glass into the pathway beside the garden (thankfully no dog walkers around to get impaled) and neatly slicing off my new asparagus growth. Working in the greenhouse, trying to rescue the potted peppers, aubergines etc was quite scarey, hoping the rest of the glass didn’t break while I was in there. So this morning have just cut a couple of bits of spare polycarbonate sheeting to fit, replacing the four broken roof panes. I gave up buying new glass 3 years ago; after the next 4 panes broke I made 4 plywood panels to fit at the bottom of the sides, moving the remaining glass around to fill the gaps, then the next lot of broken panes were replaced with acrylic sheeting. Only problem is, if I gradually replace all the glass with plastic, the thing will be light enough to go airbourne in these gales.
